There are certain things you can't do in Australia, that I wish you could, like find half-and-half for your coffee, or buy beer at the convenient store. However, we've taken great enjoyment from observing some of the odd things that are available to make Aussie culture so unique. (It may not come as a surprise to you that many of them are food- and/or shopping-related.) In case you're considering visiting Australia, you should know that you can:1. Shop for gorgeous meats or fresh fruits and veggies at a counter inside the mall.
2. See a contortionist during a comedy festival for $10 a person.
3. Buy t-shirts for $6, sweaters for $10 and pants for $7.
4. Change your watch 30 minutes forward for a half-hour time zone change.
5. Watch a TV commercial for a professional sports team.
6. Rent 6 DVDs for $5 for one week.
7. Pay $6.20 a gallon for gas.
8. See two teenagers having sex under a bridge by a well-traveled pedestrian walkway. (This happened! To Bryan! Honest!)
9. Spot kangaroos in your backyard.
10. Order an "American" pizza and get pepperoni and mushroom. (How did they know?!)
11. Check in for a flight, go through security, and board your plane -- all without once ever showing a photo ID.
12. Trust $2 street sushi.
13. Catch your favorite TV show starting at 8:30, or 9:30, or 10:05.
14. Hear the f-word on regular broadcast TV.
You can also, as you know, meet many fun people, reunite with others you've met before, rent a super house for a pittance and experience authentic Aussie traditions in a variety of fun-loving ways. After seven weeks -- our longest in any country on the trip -- we're about ready to get out from down under.
Fittingly, our final Australian sightseeing jaunt was truly stellar, taking us along the famed Great Ocean Road -- where we saw koalas hanging out in the trees as we drove along, toured a beautiful lighthouse, stayed at a cool "eco" hostel, took a spectacular walk on this unique "fly" -- a huge steel walkway ascending 25 meters above the trees in a rainforest -- and made our last photographed site the gorgeous 12 Apostles. Even Mr. Hunter Jr. got in on the action.
We're leaving for Vietnam tomorrow, psyched to start the next phase of our journey. Our arrival in Asia is made that-much-more exciting by the fact that we'll be joined by none other than Mr. Daniel Krieger, along with, for three days, his best friend Ryan. We're also lucky to have Mr. Michael Pierce working on our behalf to hook us up with guides and dinners and, of course, massages in Ho Chi Minh City. What could be better?
Our schedule for the next 5 weeks looks like this:
Week 1: Vietnam (with Daniel)
Week 2: Cambodia (with Daniel)
Weeks 3 and 4: Cambodia and Laos
Week 5: Ko Samui, Thaliand
Then we go to Africa and meet up with four fine American lasses!
We're super-excited. ..........
