Much to the chagrin of select friends and family, we're stashing a little slice of home in our backpacks: TV shows on DVD. Some say this negates a primary point of the trip -- to escape from technology, TiVo, and our indulgent, shallow American culture. I say it's a comfort from home that fits inside a quart-sized Ziploc bag. (An entire season of The OC does! Try it!) Plus, we're already bringing a little bitty laptop for uploading photos and composing blog posts while on the road. So why not carry a bit of entertainment for a long train ride or a rainy day inside the beachside bure? Here's what we're bringing. The shows were chosen based on a combination of a) the fact that we've never seen any episodes from the season/s in question, and b) the recommendation of trusted TV experts.
1. The OC, Season 1
2. 24, Season 4
3. Northern Exposure, Seasons 1-3
4. The Shield, Season 1
5. American Dreams, Season 1
We also threw in a few classic episodes of Seinfeld and a movie or two for good measure.
Here's what else is in my backpack.
What TV shows would you bring? ..........

7 Comments:
Alias Season 1
The Office (u.s. version) Season 1
Sopranos Season 1 (i've never seen it)
Oooh you know, I'd really like to add Arrested Development. Alias seasons 1 and 2: Get them!
Yes, definitely Arrested Development! And Fawlty Towers is a must! I can watch those over and over and over and over and over...
I think you should upgrade The Shield from season one to seasons one through four.
Also, I can't recommend Veronica Mars season one enough. I loved it so much, I downloaded all of season two so far with Bit Torrent....
And you want a treat also, get season one (and only) of the quickly cancelled Wonderfalls. Great show.
No LOST? Scrubs? Sopranos?
Smallville is like the OC but with xray vision. Grey's Anatomy is the OC with scalpels (tho might not be on DVD, I dunno...)
TV/Movie combo: first season of Firefly followed by the movie Serenity... you will be a leaf in the wind.
Other cancelled gems: Once and Again. Also, NOW and Again (with Dennis Haysbert before he was president). Dunno if either is on DVD, but if they are, they're probably cheap. Sports Night!
I hear The Wire is good, but haven't seen it yet.
Christ, I could go on all night. That should entertain you at least until the summit of Kilimanjaro.
What TV show?

Finally! You're packing! I'm most impressed with your compact backpack. And your balaclava - which, incidentally, was the subject of a trivia question in our game of Cranium last night! See? You are already enriching our lives with your adventures. Thank you.
Excellent! Thanks all for your suggestions. As for TV shows -- I would love to add Arrested Development and possibly Firefly... Eric, I am 100% with you on Veronica: Bryan and I watched the reruns of Season 1 (they skipped a bunch in the middle though) and *loved* it. Miss Sue P, I am sad that you are playing Cranium without us, but glad we are still partaking somehow. Holy crap, we're leaving in less than a week!
