Fascinated by Truckers /

Driving cross-country for the second time, I am once again left with many questions for the multitude of professional truckers traversing these very highways. Do they form friendships, and arrange their stops to meet up at the same Flying J each Tuesday? Is there a trucker hierarchy, whereby certain types of trucks (or cargo) constitutes the ruling class? How long does each trucker drive before needing to rest? Do they all have iPods? Sirius? Hands-free cell phones?

Tonight we met a few truckers in the hotel bar -- one made me a rose crafted from a cocktail napkin, as he left the bartender tips in a variety of other inspiring origami shapes. None of the truckers seemed to know each other, but they made easy conversation with each other (and us) and I enjoyed sharing a beer with them.

In a future life I'd like to further investigate the intriguing trucker culture.
